A diary of William Thompson, July 8th, 1857- October 8th, 1871. It records his voyage to Australia in the "Donald McKay" between July and September 1857, then goes on to describe his work in Melbourne as a saw miller and engine cleaner, as well as his interests and family life.

Thompson of Marion, Iowa served with the 20th Iowa Infantry regiment during the Civil War. He was appointed Major on August 1, 1862. In December 1862 he was severely wounded at Prairie Grove, Arkansas and on May 18, 1864 he resigned from service. From the description of William G.
